Dr. Julian Adams (Evolutionary Biology, University of Michigan). Dr. Adams accepted a position with the Bureau of Economic Growth, Agriculture and Trade at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID/EGAT). His primary focus in this role is the development and introduction of genetically-modified food crops to enhance agricultural production in developing countries. One of his important duties is the drafting of regulatory and policy frameworks for the conduct of field trials for GM crops, as a preparation for commercial production and widespread cultivation by individual farmers. Dr. Adams’ work in this area supports U.S strategic foreign trade policy to promote exports of U.S.-developed GM crops and agricultural technology. In this role he is leading the effort to establish cooperative networks between USAID programs, strategic foreign policy and the academic community. In addition to his consultations with State Department bureaus on security-related issues as noted previously, Dr. Adams’ work further contributes to U.S. national security by enhancing regional stability and security in developing countries through the increased availability of food of enhanced nutritional content, and reduced environmental consequences from agriculture. His efforts to develop indigenous capacity for enhanced agricultural productivity is a key component of the U.S. Millenium Development goal to build S&T capacity and science-based decision-making in the developing world. Dr. Adams’ work on GMO risk management and his advocacy on behalf of U.S. agricultural biotechnology exports serve to expand international trade, which in turn strengthens U.S. economic prosperity.
