Dr. David Eastmond (Environmental Toxicology, University of California, Riverside). Dr. Eastmond’s assignment is to the Bureau of European Affairs (EUR), where he is the bureau’s principal advisor on EU chemicals regulation policy. In this capacity, he has been an active member of the EPA delegation to Brussels for negotiations on formula-tion and harmonization of chemical regulation policy. He also provides expert scientific analysis of proposed EU chemicals legislation. Dr. Eastmond has been active in the formulation of U.S. Risk Assessment Policy, particularly as it relates to the economically-important and politically-sensitive are of genetically-modified agricultural crops. He has worked closely with EPA, OMB, and FDA to develop avenues for greater US/EU collaboration on regulatory cooperation in this area. The Environmental Protection Agency, aware of Dr. Eastmond’s high-level expertise, sought out his input to EPA’s Carcinogen Exposure Risk Assessment. EUR tasked Dr. Eastmond with preparing briefings on bilateral science and technology issues for the President’s recent trip to Europe, for the Roundtable on Transatlantic Environmental Issues and for the US/EU Joint Consultative Group meeting on S&T cooperation. His work is contributing to promotion of U.S. GM agricultural technology, to the resolution of trade disputes and regulatory divergences between the U.S. and the EU, and thus to increased trade and economic prosperity.
