DR. WILLIAM S. HAMMACK (Chemical Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign). Dr. Hammack works with the Office of Nuclear Energy, Safety and Security in the Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation (ISN). He is the Department of State liaison for four Department of Energy (DoE) programs: 1) the Reduced Enrichment for Research and Test Reactors (RERTR); 2) the U.S. origin spent fuel return program; 3) the Russian origin spent fuel return program; and 4) the “gaps program.” The RERTR program focuses on converting U.S. and foreign reactors from high enriched uranium (HEU) to low-enriched uranium (LEU). The spent fuel program partners with the RERTR program by returning HEU to the country of origin. The “gaps” program focuses on nuclear material not covered by other programs.
