About MSEB

Phillip A. Griffiths, Chair
David R. Mandel, Director

The MSEB continues to address issues related to mathematics education at the kindergarten through graduate school levels. Current agenda priorities include:

  • Leadership of continuing efforts to improve mathematical sciences education nationally;
  • Coordination among ongoing educational projects;
  • Service to localities and states, through assistance in determining core competencies for all students and higher standards, and enhancing teacher preparedness;
  • Recommendations on how to strengthen weak parts of the infrastructure of mathematics education;
  • Information to enhance public understanding of the rapidly changing character of the mathematical sciences; and
  • Advice to federal, state, and local agencies on long-range goals and needs in mathematical sciences education.

The MSEB has set the following priority areas for the first decade of the 21st Century:

  • Mathematics Learning, Instruction, and Assessment
  • Equity in Mathematics Education
  • Attracting and Retaining Students in Mathematics Majors and in Mathematically Intensive Careers
  • Capacity Building and the Professionalization of Mathematics Education
  • Evidence of Effectiveness in Mathematics Education
  • Public Perceptions of Mathematics, Mathematics Learning, and Mathematics Teaching

MSEB Mission Statement

The mission of the Mathematical Sciences Education Board is to provide national leadership and guidance for policies, programs, and practices supporting the improvement of mathematics education at all levels and for all members of our society.

MSEB will fulfill its mission through:

  • A series of “conversations” among scholars and practitioners, both from U.S. and other highly industrialized nations facing similar issues in mathematics education. The conversations are aimed at a serious, scholarly approach to finding solutions, resolving conflicts, and moving ahead.
  • A series of syntheses of existing research with recommendations and dissemination to practitioners and policy makers.
  • A series of studies of “best practice” with dissemination workshops, symposia, and website data.
  • A series of studies aimed at developing models for assessing and evaluating programs and projects.

Goals

To advance our mission, the Board proposes to:

  • develop and sustain the capacity to frame, discuss, analyze, and report on critical issues in mathematical sciences education;
  • foster communication and collaboration among diverse communities of expertise and assist in the negotiation of potential areas of agreement and consensus, or articulate disparate points of view about the mathematical sciences and education;
  • provide synthesis and interpretation of evidence-based findings in mathematical sciences education to inform educational practitioners, policy makers, mathematicians, and the general public; and
  • identify areas in need of educational research and communicate these needs to potential funders, researchers, and the community as a whole.
