Partner Selection

During the fall of 2004, representatives of the Board on African Science Academy Development visited the seven African Academies in order to assess their organizational capacity, current influence on their national governments’ science policy decisions and their ties to the international non-governmental organizations in their respective countries. The academies of science of Nigeria, South Africa and Uganda were selected as initial focal points for an intensive level of engagement; strategic planning grants were awarded to the science academies of Cameroon, Ghana Senegal and Kenya.

Implementation Planning

BASAD staff members in the spring of 2005 visited the Science Academies of Uganda, South Africa and Nigeria to develop extensive implementation plans, work plans and budgets for their first year’s activities.

ASADI Progress

The program is being carried out using a phased approach. Early activities have included

training for academy staff, establishing contacts with appropriate government agencies and other organizations, fundraising, and implementing a variety of convening and consensus based activities on subjects selected by the African academy in consultation with its government, with staff members from the US National Academies serving as external consultants.
