Scientists to Speak Up


Narciso Matos, executive director of the Foundation for Community Development in Mozambique, delivered the keynote speech at the ASADI III conference in Dakar, Senegal. Read excerpts from the interview.

ASADI IV in London
The fourth annual ASADI conference was held Nov. 4-5 at the Royal Society, the national science academy of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth. Leaders of several African science academies met with their counterparts from around the world as well as with policymakers and officials of donor agencies and foundations to discuss how the unique, independent expert advice of local science academies can form a basis for decision making and development goals.

Uganda National Academy of Sciences Issues First Consensus Study
A new report from a committee of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences -- a participant in ASADI -- says that as the Ugandan government moves forward with a spraying program to combat the mosquitoes that spread malaria, it should also monitor mosquitoes for resistance to the insecticides, and manage the chemicals in ways that minimize resistance.

Leadership Summit 2008 Held In Washington, D.C.
Representatives of several African science academies met with officials of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, U.S. National Academy of Engineering, U.S. Institute of Medicine, U.K Royal Society, U.K. Academy of Medical Sciences, and the Royal Society of Canada to discuss how effective governance and communications can help ensure that academies play an important national role and contribute to evidence-based policymaking.
