Painter Katherine Sherwood explores the disabled body in her paintings and prints. She combines 21st century images of her own post stroke cerebral angiograms with neuro-anatomical prints from the 16th century, juxtaposing widely disparate understandings of the brain. With this work, she undertakes a comparative exploration of spiritual and medical imaging technologies. Paintings of early magical symbols, which mimic the tangle of arteries in the cerebral angiogram, add another layer.
Sherwood’s paintings were exhibited in the 2000 Whitney Biennial and in two recent solo shows in Los Angeles and Philadelphia. She is the recipient of numerous Awards, including the Adeline Kent Award from the San Francisco Art Institute.
