Explore the beauty of the very small. See how scientists capture amazing images with a special microscope system set up by Nikon for this first time-ever public program. Dr. Jennifer Waters from Harvard Medical School will demonstrate how light microscopes can capture scientific phenomena not visible to the naked eye.
The Koshland Science Museum will feature the winning photographs of Nikon’s 2006 Small World Photomicrography Competition from September through January on their “Sidewalk Science” installation. The Nikon Small World Photomicography Competition recognizes excellence in photomicroscopy and celebrates the beauty and complexity of objects seen through the light microscope. Dr. Jennifer Waters is the Microscopy Director for the Cell Biology and Systems Biology Departments at Harvard Medical School, where she advises and trains researchers on specimen preparation and use of microscopes and imaging software. Dr. Waters is a past winner and judge for the Nikon Small World competition. She has contributed to many scientific publications, including Current Biology and Science.
Advanced reservations are suggested. Please contact the Koshland Science Museum at 202-334-1201 or email ksm@nas.edu. Refreshments will be provided. This program is also being offered 6:00pm-8:00pm on October 4, 2006.
Support for this program was provided by the Presidents' Circle Communications Initiative of the National Academies. This program is presented in collaboration with the Koshland Science Museum.
