London-based artist Predrag Pajdic’s meticulous pen-and-ink works on canvas conjure the traditions of early anatomical etchings in both craftsmanship and playfulness. However, unlike earlier traditions of anatomical renderings, Pajdic does not try to compete for anatomical accuracy, instead focusing on the ability of anatomical representation to communicate ideas of self.
These enigmatic pieces, which were created specifically for Visionary Anatomies are open to many interpretations. His subject is repeated in a triptych as if to suggest Freud's ideas surrounding the id, the ego, and the superego. The center figure, like the ego that exists on the surface and is always visible, does not offer an interior view. The two flanking forms (id and superego), revealing fantasy structures within, seem to contemplate and scrutinize their counterpart. The twisting posture is a visual repetition of the imaginative interiors, and the tightly coiled crouched position suggests the potential and necessity of action, both of which are physical representations of the conflict between id, ego and superego.
