In Blot Out the Sun #1, Brooklyn-based Mike and Doug Starn compare the similar patterns of fragile twisting tree branches to the complex patterns of neural synapses. A central theme in the Starns’ current work is that of light as both subject and metaphor. Light, throughout the history of literature and art, has served as a symbol of knowledge and truth. The representation of tree branches that grow and twist toward a light source for survival and growth is offered by the Starns as a poetic comparison to the human mind, twisting and turning toward truth and knowledge.
To produce this piece, the Starns have utilized a combination of techniques found in both the history of photographic processes as well as tools of the current digital age. Through both traditional photography and digital printing the images were rendered on delicate papers such as Thai mulberry and tissue, which were then coated in wax and encaustic. The end result of this skillful integration of new and old techniques is an object that transcends traditional mediums, poetically embracing the power of a visual language to communicate ideas.
