*****
Ever since its first tour of North America in 1987, when the Talich Quartet was heralded as "a national treasure," this quintessentially eastern European ensemble has won accolades for its subtle and elegant interpretations of the string quartet repertoire.
The Quartet was formed at the Prague Conservatory in 1964 and is named for the noted conductor and founder of the Czech Philharmonic, Vaclav Talich, from whom its current first violinist is descended. Recognized internationally as one of Europe's finest ensembles, the Talich tours annually throughout Europe, Japan and North America, and has appeared in the Middle East, Australia, and Indonesia.
Particularly noted for its interpretations of the great Czech composers (Smetana, Dvorak, Martinu, Janacek), the Talich has recorded many of their works on the Calliope label. Its extensive discography also includes the complete string quartets of Mozart, Beethoven and Bartok, which have won critical acclaim and numerous awards, including a "Golden Disc" from Suraphon and several "Grand Prix du Disque" and "Diapason d'Or."
