CODATA Workshop on Scientific Information in Latin America
In collaboration with the CODATA Task Group on Preservation of and Access to Scientific and Technical Data in Developing Countries and the Brazilian National Committee for CODATA, the U.S. National Committee for CODATA co-organized a three-day workshop on “Strategies for Open and Permanent Access to Scientific Information in Latin America: Focus on Health and Environmental Information for Sustainable Development” on May 8-10, 2007, in Atibaia, São Paulo, Brazil. The workshop provided an international and interdisciplinary forum attended by approximately 70 experts to discuss and identify priority areas and specific projects that can promote a deeper understanding of and requirements for long-term preservation, open access, and improved use of digital scientific information resources for sustainable development in Latin America. More information about the workshop and the participants’ contributions can be found at: http://www.cria.org.br/eventos/codata2007/.
Scientific Data in Southern Africa: A CODATA Workshop
The U.S. National Committee for CODATA, in collaboration with the ICSU Regional Office for Africa (ROA), the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa, the CODATA Task Group on Preservation of and Access to Scientific and Technical Data in Developing Countries, and the South African National Committee for CODATA, co-organized the initial workshop of the CODATA Task Group on Data Sources for Sustainable Development in SADC Countries. This two-day workshop was held at the South African National Research Foundation on 14-15 May 2007. The main goal of the workshop was to follow up on the principal recommendations from an antecedent September 2005 CODATA Workshop and to establish a work plan for the new CODATA Task Group for 2007-2008. Over 30 experts representing different sectors and institutions from the SADC region attended. The results of this workshop will be posted on the USNC/CODATA Web site by July.
InterAcademy Panel (IAP) Holds Regional Planning Meetings on International Issues
The ISTIP Office staff supported two regional IAP planning meetings on “Developing an Action Agenda for Science Academies in Promoting Access to and Use of Digital Knowledge Resources and Infrastructure.” The two meetings, held in Atibaia, São Paulo, Brazil, on May 11th, and in Pretoria, South Africa, on May 16th, were organized in collaboration with the Brazilian and South African Science Academies.
Each meeting was attended by 20-25 representatives from the respective regions’ science academies, as well as other experts representing scientific, governmental, and international organizations. The planning meetings served to: (1) identify the roles that science academies can play in promoting access to and use of digital knowledge resources and infrastructure, and (2) agree upon one or more specific regional projects that can be implemented by science academies in collaboration with other stakeholder organizations working in the same area. More information about these meetings will be available on the ISTIP Web site in July.
