About the Board

The Board on Mathematical Sciences and their Applications (BMSA) was established in November 1984 to lead activities in the mathematical sciences at the National Research Council (NRC). The BMSA reports to the Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences (DEPS) of the NRC. The Board consists of 19 members whose backgrounds represent the wide range of the mathematical sciences--core mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, operations research, scientific computing, and financial and risk analysis. This composition of the Board reflects a deep conviction of the unity of the mathematical sciences in all their manifestations and of the importance of adding to both the knowledge in and the applicability of the mathematical sciences. The Board has one standing committee, the Committee on Applied and Theoretical Statistics (CATS), established by the NRC in 1977 to focus on issues affecting research and education in the statistical sciences. The chair of CATS is an ex officio member of the Board.
