The Impact of War on Child Health in the Countries of the Former Yugoslavia

Publications: The Impact of War on Child Health in the Countries of the Former Yugoslavia: A Workshop Summary (1995)

In March 1994, the Institute of Medicine, in collaboration with the Office of International Affairs of the National Research Council, convened a workshop in Trieste, Italy on the Impact of War on Child Health in the Countries of the Former Yugoslavia. Participants included eight doctors from the United States, three European doctors, and 19 doctors from the five countries that constituted the former Yugoslavia. The goal of the workshop was to address three central questions:

  • What is the state of child health in war-torn former Yugoslavia?
  • What can be done to improve it?
  • And how might this knowledge be used to benefit other children in the world?

The presentations and deliberations of the workshop participants provided insight into currently available information to assess the physical and mental health of the children in these countries. Workshop discussions identified gaps in knowledge that can be addressed by future studies and professional exchanges in the areas of epidemiology, primary care, trauma, acute and chronic illnesses, mental health, and child protection.

A report, The Impact of War on Child Health in the Countries of the Former Yugoslavia: A Workshop Summary, was published in 1995.

Support for this project was provided by the Ford Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Soros Humanitarian Foundation, and Ross Products Division of Abbott Laboratories.
