Speaker Bio – May 14 meeting of the Committee on Prevention of Mental Disorders and Substance Abuse Among Children, Youth, and Young Adults
ALAIN JOFFE, MD, MPH has been active in many adolescent-related areas within the American Academy of Pediatrics since 1994, including serving as a representative to the CDC STD Prevention Partnership; a member of the Section on Adolescent Health Executive Committee (1995-2001); a member of the Committee on Substance Abuse (1997-2003); and currently as chairperson of the Committee on Substance Abuse (term ends June 2007). In addition to these positions, he also serves as a liaison to the AAP Task Force on Mental Health representing substance abuse issues and am a member of the Child and Adolescent Health Action Group. He has served as a peer reviewer for many scientific articles and has authored book chapters and monographs, including the AAP Substance Abuse manual. He served as editor for multiple journals, including Adolescent Medicine Clinics, Contemporary Pediatrics, and Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. In addition to being a member of the AAP, he belongs to the Society for Adolescent Medicine. Outside the Academy, Dr. Joffe is the director of the Student Health and Wellness Center at Johns Hopkins University and part-time Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He feels that his expertise in the area of adolescent health, along with his extensive experience and service to the Academy for 10+ years, provides the background needed to serve as the Section on Adolescent Health chairperson.
