Daniel Barstow: Biographical Sketch
Daniel Barstow is Director of the Center for Earth and Space Science Education (CESSE) at TERC in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he is responsible for the overall direction of CESSE and leadership of specific projects involving both space and earth sciences. He directs a team of 20 scientists, educators and technology specialists, conducting research, development and policy reform in revolutionary approaches to Earth science education, emphasizing Earth as a system, visualization technology and inquiry-based learning. Mr. Barstow is involved in leadership and curriculum development roles in several SSP projects, including GLOBE, KidSat, and the Mars Education Exploration Program. His work has had a special focus on the use of geographic visualizations in education. He is principal investigator for Visualizing Earth and was project director for the First National Conference on the Educational Uses of Geographic Information Systems and is co-principal investigator for the Student and Scientist Partnership Conference. He is the author of the Accu-Weather Forecaster software package. Previously Mr. Barstow was the assistant director of the Talcott Mountain Science Center, and a teacher and administrator in the Hartford public schools. Mr. Barstow earned a B.S. in Elementary and Alternative Education at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, and an M.Ed. in Urban and Bilingual Education University of Hartford. He has post-masters work in Educational Administration from the University of Connecticut in Storrs.
