Kefyn Catley is Assistant Professor of Science Education, Peabody College, Vanderbilt University with a secondary appointment in the Department of Biological Sciences at Vanderbilt. He obtained his B.Sc. Hons. from the University of Wales, Masters from Western Carolina University, and Ph.D. from Cornell. His background is in evolutionary biology and he worked for a number of years as a Research Scientist at the American Museum of Natural History, New York, studying the evolutionary biology of spiders. While a researcher at the Museum he was appointed Staff Scientist for Biodiversity, National Center for Science Literacy, Education and Technology and worked extensively with K-12 teachers as part of the Museum’s educational outreach and teacher professional development programs. As an Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Education at Rutgers he worked with pre- and in-service science teachers. His educational research revolves around classroom applications of evolutionary biology and biodiversity science. Working with pre- and in-service teacher and their students, he investigates the multiple complexities of understanding evolution. He has published on spider biology, the biodiversity crisis, environmental education, scientists and K-12 education, and teacher education.
