Elaine A. Johnson is the Director of Bio-Link, a National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education Center for Biotechnology at City College of San Francisco. She works with Regional Directors to promote education for entry-level biotechnology technicians across the country. Elaine is a faculty member at City College of San Francisco. She is a Faculty Fellow at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and has participated in the development of the National Skill Standards for Bioscience and their integration with the Agricultural Biotechnology Standards. She specializes in creating partnerships with industry and articulation between educational institutions. The biotechnology program at City College of San Francisco has already prepared technicians who are currently working in research laboratories at UCSF and in biotechnology companies such as Genentech. Elaine serves on numerous national advisory panels including the DNA Interactive Advisory Panel that provided input for the PBS series celebrating the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the structure of DNA. She is an active member of the UCSF Community Advisory Group and Public Science Project and is particularly interested in the growth of Mission Bay and support for creating a skilled workforce to serve the biomedical research community. Elaine co-chaired the Outreach and Education Committee for BIO 2004. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry and Physics from the University of Minnesota, a Master’s in Microbiology from San Francisco State, a second Master’s in Clinical Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport and her Ph.D. in Community College Leadership from the University of Texas at Austin.
