InterAcademy Panel Working Group Meeting
On March 16-17, 2006 the Board on Science Education (BOSE) facilitated an InterAcademy Panel (IAP) Working Group meeting. The goal of this meeting was to construct an evaluation framework to guide an international data collection effort on inquiry-based science education in the elementary grades. This meeting was a follow-up meeting to a September 2005 one organized and hosted by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm where 26 countries were represented.
At the March meeting, the InterAcademy Panel Working Group was comprised of representatives of Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, France, India, Sweden, United Kingdom and United States. Philip Bell, a Professor of cognitive studies from the University of Washington, was the liaison from the Board on Science Education for this activity. The task of this group is to produce a report that outlines a general evaluation framework and plan to guide an international data collection effort. This report will be presented in June 2006 at another IAP meeting in Paris to share the evaluation framework design. Based on this, an international evaluation activity will be undertaken under the leadership of the IAP. Dr. Jorge Allende from the University of Chile, Santiago is leading this effort for the InterAcademy Panel and working with the BOSE director, Jean Moon.
