Janet Carlson Powell the Associate Director at the BSCS (Biological Sciences Curriculum Study) in Colorado Springs. In this capacity, she oversees the centers for curriculum development, professional development, and research of the organization. Her primary activities at this time include the following:

  • Initiating research projects that study the effectiveness of standards-based science curriculum materials when implemented with varying degrees of professional development; and
  • Leading the work of the Science Curriculum Implementation Center at BSCS with Nancy Landes and Project Director Jim Short.

Dr. Powell has been active in science education for more than 20 years with a range of experiences including teaching middle school and high school life and earth science, teaching science methods for preservice and master teachers, developing university-school partnerships to improve science teaching and learning, developing innovative science curriculum materials, leading professional development activities in science education, and conducting school-based research.
