Margo Murphy serendipitously discovered teaching and has taught for the last 18 years at Georges Valley HS, in a small Midcoast Maine community. She has been very active in facilitating and leading a dedicated group of k-12 science teachers in her district. Their mission is to understand and put into practice the most effective science program possible. Within her high school she served for many years as department chair. This past year she passed that duty on to a younger colleague ready to grow professionally. Her own professional development in the last 5 years has focused on understanding standards based education. She has received her national board certification in adolescent and young adult science teaching. She was a Governor’s Academy for Science Leadership fellow for two years. Her awards include Presidential Awardee in secondary science in 1994, Maine Environmental Educator of the Year 1996, and Maine Conservation Educator of the Year 2002. Ms. Murphy graduated from the University of Maine at Orono with a degree in Forestry in 1985. She received her M.Ed in science education in 1992.
