National Aeronautics and Space Administration
Pre-College Education Programs Evaluation

The Board on Science Education (BOSE) was charged by Congress, with sponsorship from NASA, to evaluate the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) pre-college science, technology, and mathematics education programs. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education has become a focus of increasing national concern due to recognition of a lack of public understanding of scientific inquiry, a retiring aerospace workforce, and job recruitment competition for those with science and engineering degrees. In addition, the reorganization of NASA and new strategic plan for education presented a critical moment for an assessment of previous and on-going education efforts at NASA.

The NASA portfolio of education projects is large and diverse. This evaluation reviewed the NASA Office of Education’s Elementary and Secondary Education Program. The 11 member committee evaluated the effectiveness of the overall program, assessed the quality of the major projects in the program, reviewed funding priorities, and examined the collaboration between NASA and other federal agencies. The committee’s final report, NASA’s Elementary and Secondary Education Program: Review and Critique, recommends strategies to improve program and project design, implementation, and evaluation.
