Phil Sumida currently teaches physics at Maine West High School, a suburban high school just north of Chicago, Illinois. He has taught various laboratory science subjects for 12 years; all of those years have included teaching physics. From his earliest teaching days, he has made technology tools in the science laboratory a focus of his teaching. His classes participated in the TERC Energynet project, where students used the Internet and other technology tools to make recommendations on improving school energy use. He has provided technology training for students, teachers, administrators, private corporations, and workers in the non-profit sector. He worked in the Semiconductor Laser Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a “Teacher-in-Residence,” completing laboratory processing work and community outreach activities. He is a National Board Certified Teacher in physics and has taken part in the construction and evaluation of teacher responses for the National Board’s timed assessment for physics instructors. Most recently, he has taken part in the process of grading the Advanced Placement exam in Physics. Mr. Sumida is a founding member of the NAS Teacher Advisory Council.
