Committee on Performance Levels for Adult Literacy
Project Scope:
The Board on Testing and Assessment will conduct a 15-month study that will provide an objective analysis of the performance levels that were selected in 1992 for the National Adult Literacy Survey (NALS), recommendations for whether alternative standards are needed and, if so, what they should be. This project will inform the standards setting for the 2003 re-administration of the NALS. As a result of its reviews, discussions, and deliberations, the committee may decide that changes are needed in the cutpoints set for performance levels or in the process for setting the cutpoints. Based on the information collected from project activities, the committee will prepare a report that documents their reviews of background information, describes any analyses and/or standard setting procedures conducted, presents their conclusions and/or recommendations, and provides the rationale for their decisions.
This study is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education.
