Assessment of 21st Century Skills

An ad hoc steering committee will plan and conduct a public workshop to explore current research, development, administration, and evaluation of assessments that may be able to measure 21st century skills. The workshop will build on two previous workshops. The first workshop, in 2007, explored growing employer demand for employees who possess broad, transferable skills (including adaptability, complex communication skills, and non-routine problem solving). The second workshop, in 2009, examined the idea that facets of these broad “21st century" skills can be developed within the context of high-quality science education, as well as within other school subjects, and also raised critical questions about how to assess these types of skills. This workshop will address these questions, shedding light on research related to assessments that may be capable of measuring 21st century skills. The major themes emerging from the workshop presentations and discussions will be synthesized in an individually-authored workshop summary report.
