Workshop Series for the U.S. Department of Education’s Equity and Excellence Commission
The U.S. Department of Education’s Equity and Excellence Commission has asked the NRC to convene a one-day workshop to provide the Commission with assistance in exploring the scientific evidence related to the discussion and recommendations that will be included in the Commission’s forthcoming report.
The Commission has asked the NRC to commission a set of papers on topics that have been jointly identified through collaboration with the Commission staff and NRC staff. The papers are to be short literature reviews of each the specific topics. The papers should briefly summarize the conclusions and controversies with regard to the specific topic and identify a small number of essential publications. Authors of the papers will present them at the workshop.
The papers will focus on the topics of teacher professional development, early learning programs, special education, educating English language learners, the impacts of high-stakes testing, and international comparisons. The specific questions that each paper will address will be determined in collaboration with the Commission. The workshop steering committee will assist in identifying authors of the papers, arranging for workshop discussants, and organizing the other details of the workshop.
