CAMOS has initiated the AMO volume of the next Physics Decadal Survey, AMO2010. While this study is being prepared and conducted, CAMOS will be dormant.
AMO 2010: An Assessment of and Outlook for Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Science
Summary
It has been over a decade since the publication of the last comprehensive assessment of the field of atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) science (Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Science: An Investment in the Future, National Academy Press, Washington, DC 1994), known as the “FAMOS” report. It has been seven years since publication of the “COSE” report (Harnessing Light: Optical Science and Engineering for the 21st Century, National Academy Press, Washington, DC 1998) that discussed many AMO applications. Since the publication of these assessments, there have been major advances in AMO science that are manifestations of profound changes in the field. A new study of the field, assessing progress and looking ahead to the future, is therefore timely.
AMO2010, the next decadal assessment and outlook of AMO science, will be framed in terms of the compelling science and the intellectual drivers for the field. The report will enable a non-scientist reader to understand what it is that AMO researchers want to learn in the coming decades and why.
A panel with expertise across the range of AMO disciplines has been formed to produce a report (1) identifying new opportunities, compelling scientific questions, and themes that have arisen from recent advances and accomplishments in the field; (2) discussing connections between AMO science and other scientific fields, emerging technologies, and national needs; (3) explaining how AMO science meets workforce, educational, and other societal needs; and (4) making recommendations for a strategy to fully realize the potential at the frontiers of AMO science.

Activities
The study will be completed in three stages. The first (assessment) stage will be concerned with a science review of the field, and will address the key research issues facing the AMO community, exposing the compelling scientific motivations for the field, and evaluating themes and opportunities for further progress. The second (outlook) phase, will result in the development of a forward-looking strategy for the pursuit of these goals and realization of the opportunities. The committee has met in plenary session and has held town meetings at professional society meetings so as to engage the AMO community in the study process.
Interim Report
On November 15, 2005, the committee publicly released its interim report, addressing the first stage of the project.
