February 2008

Harold Shapiro, Edward Witten, and Norman Augustine delivered presentations at a symposium organized by Lawrence Krauss and Don Shapero during the annual AAAS meeting on February 18, 2008 in Boston, MA. The symposium, entitled "Global Science in the Modern World: Perspectives on the Quantum Universe," explored the responsible use of public resources and the coming revolutions in particle physics, and strategies for international science partnerships. Dr. Shapiro's presentation delivered at the conference is available here. Please check back soon for the other presentations.

The
Committee on Biomolecular Materials and Processes released the prepublication version of its final report, “Inspired by Biology: From Molecules to Materials to Machines,” on Friday, February 15th at 10:00 am EST!

held a town hall on at 12:30pm on January 8, 2008 at the American Astronomical Society meeting in Austin, TX.

The BPA Chair was invited to discuss the upcoming Astronomy and Astrophysics Decadal Survey with the membership of the
American Astronomical Society at their Winter meeting in Austin TX on January 9th. Notes from the meeting can be read here, and audio/video versions are available on the AAS Website (session 86).

February 2007

CORF filed Comments in the Matter of Recommendations Approved by the Advisory Committee for the 2007 World Radiocommunication Conference (IB Docket No. 04-286) on February 2, 2007. In these comments, CORF discusses the importance of the scientific observations performed only in the Earth Exploration Satellite Service (EESS) bands at 36.0-37.0 GHz and the need to protect such observations. CORF also urges the Commission to reinstate a mandatory power limit in Document WAC/151 in order to protect that EESS band.

January 2007

CORF filed
Comments in the Matter of Recommendations Approved by the Advisory Committee for the 2007 World Radiocommunication Conference (IB Docket No. 04-286) on December 6, 2006. In these comments, CORF discusses the importance of the scientific observations performed only in the Earth Exploration Satellite Service (EESS) bands at issue in the Public Notice and the need to protect such observations. CORF also expresses general support for the use of mandatory out-of-band emission limits on active services to protect the adjacent and nearby EESS bands at issue herein.

The House of Representatives Committee on Science held a hearing on Wednesday, February 2, 2005 to explore options for the future of the Hubble Space Telescope. Former BPA member and Co-Chair of the
2000 Astronomy and Astrophysics Decadal Survey, Joseph H. Taylor, Jr., testified to the Committee in the context of the survey priorities.

This special event was hosted by UC-Irvine Chancellor Ralph Cicerone and featured talks from many distinguished scientists, engineers, and researchers.

  • Responding to the request of Dr. Raymond Orbach, Director, Office of Science, Department of Energy, the Burning Plasma Assessment Committee has issued a letter report on Dec. 20, 2002, recommending that the United States reenter negotiations to become a partner in the multinational ITER collaboration, a large experimental fusion facility.
  • The report “Neutrinos and Beyond: New Windows on Nature” is now available; the report was release in prepublication form on Dec. 11, 2002. A summary is available in PDF or HTML formats. The report addresses the importance of the scientific research that would be enabled by IceCube and an underground laboratory.

  • Study of the Smithsonian Institution research units specified in President's 2003 budget request. Among the research units is the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. The BPA and the Board on Life Sciences are carrying out the project, and the BPA is supporting the part of the study focusing on SAO. More information.

  • Phase II of the report of the Committee on Physics of the Universe to be released. Connecting Quarks with the Cosmos: Eleven Science Questions for the New Century will be released at the Albuquerque meeting of the American Physical Society on April 21. The report recommends an implementation plan for the science priorities identified in the Phase I report. Contact The Academies' Office of News and Public Information at (202) 334-2138.
  • BPA meets in Washington, DC on April 26-27. The meeting, to be held at The Academies Georgetown Facility, will feature briefings by leaders in agencies sponsoring research in astronomy and physics. New projects will be discussed and progress on current projects will be reviewed. The final agenda is available in PDF form.

  • OSTP requests review of proposed neutrino detectors. In a letter to Bruce Alberts, Chairman of the National Research Council, OSTP Director John H. Marburger requested a review of “proposed U.S. neutrino collectors in the context of current and planned neutrino research capabilities throughout the world.” Project status will be posted and periodically updated.

  • Astronomy and Astrophysics in the New Millennium: An Overview is now available on the Web. This booklet is a brief, richly illustrated, non-technical summary of the leading challenges in astronomy identified in the report Astronomy and Astrophysics in the New Millennium. The booklet describes a wealth of intriguing new questions about the universe and its constituent galaxies, stars, and planets and provides large-format pictures of the phenomena and observations that raised these questions. It also gives capsule descriptions of the new initiatives recommended to address the questions, including the Next Generation Space Telescope and the ground-based Giant Segmented Mirror Telescope.

The event will take place at 10:00 a.m. on June 19, 2001 in Room 104 of the NRC's Green Building at 2001 Wisconsin Avenue. It will be web cast, and there will be a link to the audio stream on the NAS home page on the day of the event. The agenda will include four talks on various aspects of the study.
