Symposium on Future Directions in Research at the Intersection of the Physical and Life Sciences (RIPLS)

December 19, 2007
National Academy of Sciences Building
Washington, DC

Under the auspices of the National Research Council of the National Academies, a study has commenced to examine the intersection of the physical and life sciences. For this study, the committee has been charged to develop a conceptual framework for research at this intersection, to conduct an assessment of current work, to identify high-priority research opportunities, and to explore ways to enable and enhance effective interactions between the life and physical sciences. In order to address this charge, the committee is holding a one day symposium on Future Directions in Research at the Intersection of the Physical and Life Sciences on December 19, 2007 at the National Academy of Sciences building in downtown Washington, D.C. The event will explore ways that physical and life scientists, working together, can promote transformative advances in scientific understanding. The symposium will be organized around a series of questions and potential applications including biomedicine, origin of life and evolution, cognition and learning, energy security, climate change and environment, safety and national security, biologically-inspired materials, questions at levels from molecules to organisms and from organisms to ecosystems, and tools necessary to conduct this research. The agenda will include short presentations and ample time for discussion.

This workshop is free of charge and open to the public. All members of the scientific community are encouraged to attend and engage in discussion about exciting, cutting-edge science and prospects for future opportunities. An open letter of invitation to the community is posted here.
