- Responding to the request of Dr. Raymond Orbach, Director, Office of Science, Department of Energy, the Burning Plasma Assessment Committee has issued a letter report on Dec. 20, 2002, recommending that the United States reenter negotiations to become a partner in the multinational ITER collaboration, a large experimental fusion facility.
- The report “Neutrinos and Beyond: New Windows on Nature” is now available; the report was release in prepublication form on Dec. 11, 2002. A summary is available in PDF or HTML formats. The report addresses the importance of the scientific research that would be enabled by IceCube and an underground laboratory.

- The report Frontiers in High Energy Density Physics: The X-Games of Contemporary Science was released at the Orlando APS meeting on November 14. A summary is available.

May 2002
- Study of the Smithsonian Institution research units specified in President's 2003 budget request. Among the research units is the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. The BPA and the Board on Life Sciences are carrying out the project, and the BPA is supporting the part of the study focusing on SAO. More information.
April 2002
- Phase II of the report of the Committee on Physics of the Universe to be released. Connecting Quarks with the Cosmos: Eleven Science Questions for the New Century will be released at the Albuquerque meeting of the American Physical Society on April 21. The report recommends an implementation plan for the science priorities identified in the Phase I report. Contact The Academies' Office of News and Public Information at (202) 334-2138.
- BPA meets in Washington, DC on April 26-27. The meeting, to be held at The Academies Georgetown Facility, will feature briefings by leaders in agencies sponsoring research in astronomy and physics. New projects will be discussed and progress on current projects will be reviewed. The final agenda is available in PDF form.
March 2002
- OSTP requests review of proposed neutrino detectors. In a letter to Bruce Alberts, Chairman of the National Research Council, OSTP Director John H. Marburger requested a review of “proposed U.S. neutrino collectors in the context of current and planned neutrino research capabilities throughout the world.” Project status will be posted and periodically updated.
