What's New in 1997

November 14, 1997

  • The December issue of BPA News is now available in Adobe portable document file format.
  • The Committee on Condensed-Matter and Materials Physics has just released a short report highlighting research forefronts and the impact of basic research in this field on everyday life. The report, entitled The Physics of Materials, is available in color-illustrated printed form from the BPA as well as in "book object" and Adobe portable document file forms on the Web.
  • The Committee on Gravitational Physics was recently formed under the chairmanship of James Hartle of UC/Santa Barbara to prepare a volume of the physics survey. The committee invites written input from scientists working in gravitational physics that are related to the objectives of the study. (See the Committee homepage at the above link.)
  • The BPA held its semiannual meeting on November 1-2 at the Academies' Beckman Center on the UC/Irvine campus. A full report of the meeting appears in the December issue of BPA News.
  • Just before the BPA convened, there were several special meetings at the Center to launch new activities:
  • On October 31, former BPA Chair David Schramm convened a group to plan the Overview volume of the new physics survey.
  • On the morning of November 1, Board member Tony Readhead convened a distinguished group of astronomers to begin preparations for the next survey of astronomy and astrophysics, which will be carried out under the auspices of the BPA in coordination with the NRC's Space Studies Board.
