Fusion Science Assessment
Statement of Task
The Fusion Science Assessment Committee (FuSAC) will assess the quality of the science component of the program of the Office of Fusion Energy Sciences (OFES) in the Office of Science of the Department of Energy. Criteria for the assessment will include excellence, impact, role in education, and contribution to strengthening the scientific foundation for fusion. FuSAC will develop a science strategy for the program that will provide a context for judgement and a direction for future development.
This study was commissioned by Dr. Martha Krebs, Director, Office of Science, Department of Energy.

Current Status
The Committee has issued a letter report. As stated in the cover letter, "The committee prepared the interim report to fulfill the commitment to provide OFES with some initial comments on the quality of the science in its program in time for inclusion in OFES’s plans for the next year."
The final report provides a more comprehensive assessment and addresses long-term issues facing the field. Entitled An Assessment of the Department of Energy's Office of Fusion Energy Sciences Program, the final report has now been published by the National Academy Press.
