Helium Reserve Committee
Board on Physics and Astronomy
National Materials Advisory Board
National Research Council
Statement of Task
The study's primary task was to examine whether selling off the federal helium reserve in the manner prescribed in the Helium Privatization Act of 1996 (P.L. 104-273) would have an adverse effect on U.S. scientific, technical, biomedical, and national security users of helium. To provide a meaningful context for this effort, the study will also examine the helium market and the helium industry as a whole in order to determine how the above users would be affected under various economic scenarios for selling off the reserve within the constraints set forth in the pertinent legislation.
