Recent Activity
The Board on Science Education is developing a practitioner-oriented volume that translates and synthesizes the report from the formal NRC study, Learning Science in Informal Environments, into a practical resource for science education practitioners in informal environments, such as materials developers, exhibit designers, program developers, program evaluators, and educators. The practitioner volume will translate findings and research-based information from the formal study in ways useful to each and all of these audiences. NEW PUBLICATION!
Ready, Set, Science!: Putting Research to Work in K-8 Science Classrooms (2007), based on the recently released National Research Council report Taking Science to School: Learning and Teaching Science in Grades K-8, summarizes a rich body of findings from the learning sciences and builds detailed cases of science educators at work to make the implications of research clear, accessible, and stimulating for a broad range of science educators. Ready, Set, Science! is filled with classroom case studies that bring to life the research findings and help readers to replicate success. Most of these stories are based on real classroom experiences that illustrate the complexities that teachers grapple with every day. They show how teachers work to select and design rigorous and engaging instructional tasks, manage classrooms, orchestrate productive discussions with culturally and linguistically diverse groups of students, and help students make their thinking visible using a variety of representational tools. This book will be an essential resource for science education practitioners and contains information that will be extremely useful to everyone including parents directly or indirectly involved in the teaching of science.

Math/Science Partnerships (MSP): Six Proceedings and Transcripts from 11 MSP Workshops (MSP Workshop Series) (2006)
This compact disc contains the electronic Proceedings from 11 workshops that were offered by the National Research Council (NRC) to grantees of the National Science Foundation’s Math/Science Partnership (MSP) Initiative. A series of workshops were designed to help MSP grantees and other participants better understand the evidentiary base and the implications and applications of that research to their individual projects. These workshops were organized around six themes: 1) Focusing on Learning: Proceedings and Transcripts (2 workshops); 2) Focusing on Assessment of Learning: Proceedings and Transcripts (2 workshops); 3) Focusing on Teacher Education for Effective Teaching and Learning: Proceedings and Transcripts (2 workshops); 4) The Role of Higher Education in Math/Science Partnerships: Proceedings and Transcripts (2 workshops); 5) Challenging Courses and Curricula: Proceedings and Transcripts (2 workshops); and 6) Making the Transition: What do We Want to Sustain? How Do we Do That: Proceedings and Transcripts (1 workshop). Each of these Proceedings contains: briefing materials that participants received prior to each workshop, transcripts, PowerPoint presentations, biographical sketches of presenters, and other resources that were made available during the workshops.

Strategic Education Research Partnership (2003) envisions a cadre of leading scientists and practitioners working collaboratively on a highly focused program of education research that is tightly coupled with practice. It proposes a large-scale, coherent program of research and development that would put the problems of educational practice at its center, and focus on all stages necessary to influence practice. You may read and search the full text of this book online at http://books.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=10670. For more information, visit the Strategic Education Research Partnership (SERP) website.
