Workshop on the Role of Language in School Learning:
Implications for Closing the Achievement Gap
An ad hoc committee will plan and convene a public workshop to explore what is known about the role of language in the early years of formal schooling (K-3) and the effects of increased demand for reading comprehension and sophisticated use of language from fourth grade onward. Of particular interest will be a review of what interventions, if any, have focused on the amelioration of language skills as a method for "closing the gap" and ensuring that students are ready to handle the language-intensive subject matter they encounter in the later elementary grades and beyond.
