Workshop on Key Transportation Indicators
_____________________________________________________________________________
Description
The Committee on National Statistics, in collaboration with the Transportation Research Board, held a workshop to assist the Bureau of Transportation Statistics in the selection and development of key transportation indicators, which are measures of change over time of the transportation system or of its social, economic, environmental, or other effects. This activity follows from a recommendation made by the 1997 CNSTAT report, The Bureau of Transportation Statstistics: Priorities for the Future, which recommended, as a matter of high priority, that the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) develop a consistent, easily understood, and useful set of key indicators of the transportation system. The workshop focused on three areas for case studies: (1) safety, (2) mobility, and (3) economic growth and trade. A report of the workshop is currently in preparation, and will include suggestions raised for specific indicators and a summary of the discussion of conceptual, methodological, and data issues. The workshop was held June 12-13, 2000.
