Panel on Reviewing Federal Business Statistics
_____________________________________________________________________________
Background
The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation has requested the Committee on National Statistics (CNSTAT) to conduct a review and assessment of federal data collection and analysis and federal static and longitudinal databases used in federal business statistics. The purpose of the study will be to evaluate the accuracy, currency, coverage, and reliability of information on business formation and growth, employment flow, revenue and investment, and contribution to economic growth. CNSTAT proposes to establish a panel to conduct such a study. The goals of this study will be to assess the current individual static and longitudinal databases on businesses; examine current data collection and analysis pertaining to the role of new business units entering the economy and their life cycles; examine the contribution of these data files to address special issues including the self-employed and woman-and minority-owned businesses; compare U.S. data sets and methodologies with those of other OECD countries; and make recommendations for improving the current system.
