Samuel H. Preston
Samuel Preston is Frederick J. Warren professor of demography at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Preston’s principal research efforts are in issues of technical demography, measurement of demographic phenomena, and patterns of human mortality. Dr. Preston is a member of both the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine. He is a member of the American Philosophical Society and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Statistical Association. He was named laureate of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population. Dr. Preston is a member of the National Academies’ Committee on National Statistics and chaired its Committee on Population. He is currently a co-chair of the Panel on Understanding Divergent Trends in Longevity in High-Income Countries. He also chaired the Panel to Review the National Children’s Study Research Plan and served as a member of the Panel on the Social Determinants of Adult Health and Mortality and many other National Academies committees. He has a Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University.
