Panel on Evaluation of USDA’s Methodology for Estimating Eligibility and Participation for the WIC Program

_____________________________________________________________________________

Background

The Panel on Evaluation of USDA’s Methodology for Estimating Eligibility and Participation for the WIC Program was convened by the Committee on National Statistics, National Research Council, in November 2000. The Panel is chaired by David Betson, Associate Professor of Economics at Notre Dame University.

The Panel will review the current methods employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and alternative methods for estimating the numbers of people who are eligible for and likely to participate in WIC. Topics for review include data and methods for determining income-eligibility, nutritional risk, and adjunct eligibility from participation in other assistance programs, and for estimating participation if the program is fully funded.
