Workshop on the Measurement of Food Insecurity and Hunger

_____________________________________________________________________________

Background

This study is to review the USDA’s current method of measuring food insecurity and hunger in the U.S. population. The study will address methodological issues in surveying individuals to obtain information to assess food insecurity and hunger, combining responses to survey questions into scaled measures of food security, and conceptualizing and measuring specific thresholds for classifying individuals and households as hungry or food insecure. The study will also address the validity of the measures and their utility for informing public policy related to food security and assess the design and implementation of the food security supplement for obtaining data useful for monitoring, evaluation, and related research purposes.
