Lee S. Shulman is the 8th President of The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, a policy center with the mission “to do and perform all things necessary to encourage, uphold and dignify the profession of the teacher.” Shulman is Charles E. Ducommun Professor of Education Emeritus and Professor of Psychology Emeritus (by courtesy) at Stanford University, and was Professor of Educational Psychology and Medical Education at Michigan State University. He is past president of the American Educational Research Association and the National Academy of Education, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Shulman’s research has dealt with teaching and teacher education, knowledge growth among preservice teachers, assessment of teaching, and medical education. His most recent studies emphasize the importance of “teaching as community property” and the central role of a “scholarship of teaching and learning’ in supporting needed changes in higher education culture.
