American Association for the Advancement of Science Directorate for Science and Policy Programs - The DSPP implements AAAS objectives in those program areas where science, government and society intersect, and consists of three programs and the newly founded Center for Science, Technology, and Congress.
American Geophysical Union
- AGU is an international scientific society with more than 32,000 members in over 115 countries. For over 75 years, AGU researchers, teachers, and science administrators have dedicated themselves to advancing the understanding of Earth and its environment in space and making the results available to the public.
American Institute of Physics
- AIP is a not-for-profit membership corporation chartered in New York State in 1931 for the purpose of promoting the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics and its application to human welfare.
American Mathematical Society: Committee on Science Policy
- The Committee on Science Policy is to provide advice to the leadership of the Society and to make recommendations as to Society policy. The general area of responsibility are those matters that fall into the broad area of science policy. The Committee is responsible for taking a long-range view in science policy.
American Physical Society
- APS is an organization of more than 41,000 physicists worldwide. Since its formation in 1899, it has been dedicated to the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics. The APS publishes some of the world's leading physics research journals. It organizes scientific meetings where new results are reported and discussed. The Society has many other programs in areas such as education, international affairs, public affairs and public information.

American Phytopathological Society. (link: www.apsnet.org) The APS, founded in 1909, is the premier educational, professional, and scientific society dedicated to the promotion of plant health and plant disease management for the common good. The Society represents the interests of five thousand scientists whose pivotal research advances the understanding of plant pathology and its application to plant health.

American Society for Engineering Education - ASEE is a nonprofit organization of individuals, institutions, and companies dedicated to improving all aspects of engineering education.
The Brookings Institution
- Brookings, a private, independent, nonprofit organization, is the nation's oldest think tank, conducting nonpartisan research in economics, governmental studies, foreign policy, and the social sciences generally. Its principal purpose is to bring knowledge to bear on the current and emerging public policy issues facing the American people.
California State University at Northridge

Center for International Science and Technology Policy
- The CISTP, which is part of GW's Elliott School of International Affairs, is the current University focal point for research, graduate study, and informed discussion related to issues in science, technology, and public policy.
Council on Competitiveness
- The Council was founded in 1986 to serve as a focal point for leadership efforts aimed at improving the competitive position of the United States in global markets. It is a private sector outgrowth of the President's Commission on Industrial Competitiveness, which completed its work in 1985.
Federation of American Scientists
- The Federation of American Scientists conducts analysis and advocacy on science, technology and public policy, including nuclear weapons, arms sales, biological hazards, secrecy, and space policy. FAS is a privately-funded non-profit policy organization whose Board of Sponsors includes half of America's living Nobel Laureates.
The Heritage Foundation
- Founded in 1973, Heritage is a research and educational institute -- a think tank -- whose mission is to formulate and promote conservative public policies based on the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense.
National Science Teachers Association
- NSTA, founded in 1944 and headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, is the largest organization in the world committed to the improvement of science education at all levels -- preschool through college. NSTA's current membership of over 60,000 includes science teachers, science supervisors, administrators, scientists, business and industry representatives, and others involved in science education.

Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society
- Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, is an honor society for scientists and engineers. Young Scientists' Network
- YSN is not an organization in the conventional sense of the word. There are no membership requirements or fees and the services of the YSN are maintained by volunteers. The primary activity of the YSN is the production of the electronic Young Scientists' Digest which is sent out to over 3000 persons almost every day.

NATIONAL, STATE, AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT SITES

Argonne National Laboratory-Mathematics and Computer Science Division - ANL is one of the U.S. Department of Energy's largest energy research centers, with an annual operating budget of about $490 million supporting more than 200 research projects. Argonne was the nation's first national laboratory. Today, the laboratory has about 4,500 employees, including about 1,775 scientists and engineers, of whom about 800 hold doctorate degrees.
Science in Air and Space: NASA's Science Policy Guide
- In addresses to groups of scientists during his first year as NASA Administrator, Mr. Daniel Goldin made a compelling case for the need for science policy that speaks to the conduct of the research enterprise. This was the genesis of NASA's Science Policy Guide, an attempt to formulate "rules of the road" to guide NASA's research programs. The Guide is intended as a major instrument for communication with the research community, other agencies and branches of government, industry and the American public.

- NSF is an independent agency of the U.S. Government, established by the National Science Foundation Act of 1950, as amended, and related legislation, 42 U.S.C. 1861 et seq., and was given additional authority by the Science and Engineering Equal Opportunities Act (42 U.S.C. 1885), and Title I of the Education for Economic Security Act (20 U.S.C. 3911 to 3922).

Office of Science and Technology Policy: The White House
- The Federal Government plays a critical investment role in maintaining American leadership in science and technology. In 1976, the OSTP was created to provide the President with timely policy advice and to coordinate the science and technology investment. Led by its director, Dr. John H. Gibbons, OSTP has assumed a prominent role in advancing the Clinton Administration's agenda in fundamental science, education and scientific literacy, investment in applied research, and international cooperation.

Public Policy Assessment Society - The Public Policy Assessment Society Inc (PPAS) is an incorporated association whose purpose is to improve public policy. The Society is not party political, and is entirely self funding. Its approach is broadly consumer oriented. The Society makes assessments of policy issues from time to time, and releases independent reports. It takes a major interest in matters on which governments and other public bodies engage in formal public consultation.

Canada

International Federation of Institutes for Advanced Study: Science, Technology, and Innovation Systems Policy Information Map Index - IFIAS was founded in 1972 with the support of prominent scientists and leading research institutions in developed and developing countries. The original purpose of IFIAS was to sponsor international, inter-disciplinary programmes and projects which were intended both to increase our understanding of global issues, and to influence policy at a national and international level. Its Secretariat was originally located in Sweden, but moved to Toronto, Canada, in 1986.
International Institute for Sustainable Development
- The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) is a not-for-profit corporation, established by the Governments of Canada and Manitoba. IISD's mandate is to promote sustainable development in decision making within government, business and the daily lives of individuals in Canada and internationally. It is directed by an independent international board, and supported by Canadian and other international donors.

Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development: Directorate for Science, Technology, and Industry - Over the medium to long term, the DSTI will address the microeconomic/structural issues involved in developing a knowledge-based economy, in a context of increasing globalisation and competition. Thailand

Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment - was established on March 24, 1979 under the amendment Act of the Proclamation of Revolutionary Party No. 216 dated September 29, 1972 and announced in Royal Gazette Vol. 96 dated March 23, 1979. Before the establishment of the Ministry, science and technology activities were independently and un-coordinately carried out by many agencies, thus resulting in overlapping functions, operations and plans.

Science Policy Research Unit: University of Sussex at Brighton - has been carrying out world-class research and teaching on issues relating to scientific discovery and technical change since 1966. The Unit's work is independent, multidisciplinary and international in scope. It is concerned with the challenges that confront decision makers in government, industry and international agencies, and with the public debate that surrounds these challenges.
The Centre for Exploitation of Science and Technology
- CEST is an independent organisation with a firm focus: identification of new business opportunities, especially those created by developments in science and technology, and exploitation of these opportunities for real business benefit. CEST energises innovation.
Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST)
- The Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST) is an office of the two Houses of Parliament (Commons and Lords) which is charged with providing balanced and objective analysis of the science and technology based issues which are relevant to Parliament. Our definition of science and technology is very broad, so POST carries out studies in defence, transport, environment, health as well as science policy, new technologies and the like.
