HAILE T. DEBAS
Haile T. Debas, member of the Institute of Medicine since 1990, serves as Dean of the School of Medicine and Vice Chancellor for Medical Affairs at the University of California at San Francisco. He also served as Chancellor of UCSF in 1997-1998, launching the process of establishing the new Mission Bay Campus of UCSF. He was previously Chair of the Department of Surgery at UCSF, and on the faculties at the University of Washington, UCLA, and the University of British Columbia during the period 1970-1987. He received his medical degree from McGill University and his undergraduate training in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He has served as President of the American Surgical Association, the Society of Black Academic Surgeons, the International Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Association, and the Association for Academic Minority Physicians. He was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and serves on the executive board of the Association of American Medical Colleges.
