Committee on Population

The Committee on Population was established by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in 1983 to bring the knowledge and methods of the population sciences to bear on major issues of science and public policy. Members of the committee and the panels it organizes serve as volunteers. The current chair of the committee is Dr. Linda J. Waite of the University of Chicago.

The committee's work is supported by staff members of the National Research Council’s Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education, and is made possible by the support of several government agencies and private foundations.

Barbara Torrey Honored at Population Association of America Annual Meeting
Barbara Torrey, former Executive Director of the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education at the National Research Council, was awarded the 2011 Robert J Lapham award at the Population Association of America annual meeting in early April. The Lapham award is given to a PAA member who has contributed to the population profession through the application of demographic knowledge to policy issues. Barbara’s long and impressive career in applied policy positions in Washington DC, her many voluntary contributions to the profession including her time on the Board of Directors of the Population Association of America, and her wide and intellectually stimulating contributions to the field made her a natural and outstanding choice for the award. The Committee on Population and the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education extend their heartfelt congratulations!
