The Committee on Population was established by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in 1983 to bring the knowledge and methods of the population sciences to bear on major issues of science and public policy. Members of the committee and the panels it organizes serve as volunteers. The current chair of the committee is Dr. Linda J. Waite of the University of Chicago.
The committee's work is supported by staff members of the National Research Council’s Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education, and is made possible by the support of several government agencies and private foundations.
