Status of Women Chemists in Academia

CWSE will conduct a study of the top 25 doctorate-granting chemistry departments. Data will be collected on the enrollment, retention, and time to degree of women and men doctoral students. In order to determine whether the women are choosing employment sectors other than academia upon graduation, we will conduct a Web-based survey of recent graduates of these 25 departments. A sample of women graduates will be interviewed to gain perspective on the factors that led to their choices of employment sector.

This project will serve as a pilot study for a larger study of science departments currently being developed. The study methodology, including survey methodology, data collection, and analysis, will provide insight to formulating the larger study which will encompass five disciplines.
