Committee on Human-Systems Integration at the

Human Factors and Ergonomic Society

53rd Annual Meeting, October 19-23, 2009

Grand Hyatt Hotel

600 E. Market Street

San Antonio, TX 78205

Stop by the National Academies’ Exhibit Booth #15

Please join the National Research Council’s (NRC) Committee on Human-Systems Integration (COHSI) at this year’s Human Factors and Ergonomic Society (HFES) 53rd annual meeting, October 19-23 in San Antonio, TX.  Founded in 1957, HFES is dedicated to promoting the discovery and exchange of knowledge concerning the characteristics of human beings that are applicable to the design of systems and devices of all kinds.

Barbara Wanchisen, Ph.D.,
Director of COHSI, said "I look forward to the upcoming HFES meeting because COHSI will make its debut there by engaging scientists and practitioners in a discussion of the visionary role it plays in the discipline of human factors/human-systems integration. We look forward to strengthening our evolving relationship with HFES."

National Academy of Engineering member and COHSI Chair William Marras, Ph.D., said, "it is extremely important that we interact with and engage the membership of HFES. This is the group of professionals that is at the leading edge of efforts related to human factors and ergonomics nationwide. I look forward to a productive and fruitful discussion regarding the future of the field."

COHSI was formed to provide new perspectives on theoretical and methodological issues concerning the relationship of individuals and organizations to technology and the environment. It also identifies critical issues in the design, test, evaluation, and use of new human-centered technologies; and advises sponsors on the research needed to expand the scientific and technical bases for effectively designing new technology and training employees. Domains considered by the Committee include such areas as: human factors engineering, physical ergonomics, training, occupational health and safety, health care, product design, and macro-ergonomics.

COHSI is sponsoring a session at this year’s conference, titled “The Future of Human Factors/Ergonomics Research: Adapt or Die!”  Held on Tuesday, October 20 at 1:30 p.m. at the Grand Hyatt (Lonestar Ballroom E - level two), this session will begin with a brief explanation of the role of the Committee on Human-Systems Integration (COHSI) at the National Research Council.  The session will focus on how human factors and ergonomic research has played a role in traditional societal issues as well as emerging societal issues and will also include an interactive panel discussion with COHSI members and the audience that will address the evolving role of human factors and ergonomic research in modern society. The session should be of interest to researchers as well as practitioners.

HFES is sponsoring an
on-site Career Center which will provide an outstanding opportunity for job seekers to meet informally and in prearranged interviews.  The National Research Council and COHSI will be conducting interviews and accepting resumes at the Career Center for the Senior Program Officer position with COHSI.  Please consult the program guide for the Career Center location or stop by exhibit booth 15 for directions to the interviews.

NRC staff and COHSI members will be available at the exhibit booth to talk more about their work.  Reports will be available to read and conference attendees also qualify for special discounts on these reports from the National Academies.

In addition, COHSI staff and committee members (in bold below) are participating in this year’s conference.  Information on their sessions is listed below.

COHSI is grateful to the
Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, the US Army Research Laboratory, the US Air Force Research Laboratory whose generous core support is making it possible for the National Academies to participate at HFES this year. In addition to the those sponsors supporting our core work, we would like to thank the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, and the Office of Naval Research who support our current studies.
