Education

Studies in education at the National Academies address questions such as:

  • How can education policy and practice be more firmly grounded in scientific research?
  • How can test scores be interpreted and used correctly and fairly to make important decisions about students and schools?
  • How can the growing body of knowledge about how people learn be applied more effectively in classrooms?
  • How can reading difficulties be prevented?
  • How can schools help motivate high school students to learn?
  • What are the most effective ways to prepare and develop teachers?

The Center for Education promotes evidence-based policy analysis to improve education for all. Through its boards, study committees, and advisory councils, the Center brings together national, state, and local leaders from education, academia, business, and government to address critical issues in education research, policy, and practice. Its studies, reports, workshops, websites, and other activities inform many important issues facing education today, including standards, testing, teaching, and the improvement of education research.

Featured Activities of CFE

The Center for Education Board guides the development of and evaluates the Center’s work and fosters connections among its boards, other National Academies’ units, and other organizations.

The Board on Science Education focuses on science education from early childhood through adulthood, both in school and in informal learning settings, such as museums. It investigates how science is learned and taught and assesses undergraduate and graduate science education, public understanding of science, and the underrepresentation of women and minorities in science-related careers.

The Board on Testing and Assessment provides scientific expertise on critical measurement and assessment issues in education and the workplace. Its purview includes test policy, accountability, techniques and technology for assessment, and human resources planning.

The Mathematical Sciences Education Board advises on mathematics curricula, instruction, and teacher education. Its purview includes early childhood mathematics learning, teaching and assessment of key mathematics ideas and concepts in the K-12 curriculum, and strengthening undergraduate and graduate mathematics education

The Mathematics and Science Partnerships Workshops this series of workshops features NRC education reports. The workshops are designed to support and encourage MSP grantees to implement evidence-based research in their individual projects. The goal of the MSP projects is to boost mathematics and science student achievement.

The Teacher Advisory Council, in addition to recognizing exemplary teaching, brings to the Center’s studies the wisdom of practice by some of the nation’s most accomplished classroom teachers.

Other National Academies’ activities:

The Board on Higher Education and Workforce (PGA) monitors critical national issues in the education and training of, and labor market for, the nation’s science and engineering workforce. It seeks to focus the expertise of scientists, engineers, educators, and economists on the formulation of national and institutional policies affecting our nation’s human resources in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology.

The Center for the Advancement of Scholarship on Engineering Education (NAE) is dedicated to achieving excellence in engineering education, education that is effective, engaged, and efficient. As a reflection of our on-going research and implementation activities, these pages will be dynamic and frequently updated.

The Committee on Engineering Education (NAE) insures quality, diversity and quantity in engineering education by providing guidance and advice to policy makers, administrators, employers and other stakeholders to the engineering education enterprise.

The Committee on Women in Science and Engineering (PGA) was established to coordinate, monitor, and advocate action to increase the participation of women in science and engineering. The committee collects and disseminates information on the education and employment of women scientists and engineers, and recommends ways to enhance women’s advancement in the fields of science and engineering.

The National Science Resources Center (joint with the Smithsonian Institution) helps school districts develop and sustain hands-on science programs.
