Social Science Evidence for Use: Improving the Quality and Utility of Social Science Research
Focus
The Standing Committee on Social Science Evidence for Use was established by the Division of Behavioral and Social Science and Education of the National Research Council to address questions of how best to strengthen the quality of social science research and its utility for public policy.
Goals
Through a number of disciplinary activities, the committee is seeking to
• Build bridges between high quality research (the supply side) and the appropriate and realistic uses of research evidence to guide decision making (the demand side).
• Tackle the conceptual and practical issues in setting evidentiary standards for applied research.
• Identify opportunities to improve professional training in behavioral and social-science research for public policy.
• Advance a culture of improved research, communication, diffusion, and understanding of opportunities for and barriers to the use of social-science research in public policy decision making.
This activity is sponsored by the William T. Grant Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Spencer Foundation, and the U.S. National Science Foundation.
