The National Academies’ Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education (DBASSE) is increasingly influential in advancing the frontiers of the behavioral and social sciences and their applications to public policy.

With expertise drawn from a broad range of disciplines, studies contribute to improving the role of government agencies and private institutions in governance and to improving human capital through better educated people, more productive workers, and a clearer understanding of human institutions and behavior. Experts convened by the Division apply their knowledge to shape public policy and practice.

The Division not only applies the best science to the study of public policy issues but also advances science by identifying needed research, as well as improvements in data and research methods. In these ways, the Division fosters better science and its use as evidence for decisions on public policies and programs.

The Division’s work is organized around four broad areas: behavioral sciences; social sciences; education; and national statistics.
